OPENING QUESTION: Let's back up a bit and consider aircraft wing designs. Imagine you are a mid-twentieth century aircraft designer. What considerations would you have in making air craft wings strong?

What about the structure of the wing itself? Do you want it to be solid?
What sort of shape might best be used to make the wing strong, but light weight?
